A Little Tid Bit of Knowledge

The past couple of weeks I have been working on a really big research report for my International Studies class. We had to choose a country, then write a 8-10 page report on it, create a power point to present to the class, and make a replica of the country's flag to hang up around the classroom. I decided that I wanted to do my report on Greece. Why? Well...

1. Its a beautiful country

2. I'm Greek

3. I love the food...Daphne's is one of my favorite restaurants

4. Some of my farorite movies are filmed in Greece....Mama Mia, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, etc.

5. I want to study abroad in Greece, so I figure I mine as well learn more about it!

I feel that there is no point in doing a research report if the only people who are going to learn from it are the teacher and other students in the class...So, I am going to share some of the little tid bits of knowledge I have aquired from doing this project.

  • Located on the Balkan Peninsula in southern Europe

  • Surrounded by the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean seas

  • 99% of the population speak Greek

  • The capitol is Athens

  • Independence Day is March 25
  • Part of the European Union

  • Currency- Euro

  • Significance of the Flag
    •Blue- Greek Seas
•White- Waves (Aphrodite ascended from waves)
•Upper left hand corner, blue square w/ white cross- importance of the Greek Orthodox Church
•Nine alternating blue and white stripes for the 9 syllables in the phrase “Eleutheria H Thanatos” meaning “freedom or death”

  • Area of 50,949 square miles (about the Size of England or Alabama)

  • Highest mountain- Mount Olympus, 2917 m

  • Meditteranean climate

  • Famous Greeks- Homer (wrote Iliad & Odyssey) and Alexander the Great

  • Olympics started in Greece in 776 BC: held at Temple of Zeus, in Olympia

I hope you learned something from reading this, I sure learned a lot from doing this project. And who knows, maybe someday you might be asked, "When did the Olympics begin?" or "What's the highest mountain in Greece?" and you'll be glad you read this!

Isn't a beautiful country?

CORRECTION...

I Failed to mention in my last post that my Dad hung all those beautiful white and blue streamers (with blue painters tape, if I might add). And it was his idea to create the poster in the first place.

THANK YOU DADDY, I LOVE YOU!

Its time...

So I decided that since Im going to leave for school in a few months, its time that I join the rest of my family, and start a blog. I dont exactly know what I will blog about, but I figure it will be about the daily life of me; a soon-to-be, poor, college student. So, here it is...Enjoy!

I figured I would start with some pictures of recent things I've been doing:

For my 18th Birthday a few friends and I went to Santa Barbara, had lunch and spent the afternoon shopping on State St. It was a beautiful day, perfect weather and lots of fun.

On Valentines Day I found out that I got accepted to BYU and will be starting in June. I came home from work that day to find a huge banner and streamers in the front entry. Thanks Mom for making it for me.

And that night I went out with some friends to a Stake dance to celebrate (it was really just coincidence that they happened on the same day)

Since then I've been keeping busy with school, work, my internship at the bank, and getting everything figured out for BYU. Its hard to believe that I leave in just 3 months!
